Hastings Academy art students are getting involved in creating a sculpture made of materials found in our woodland, this will be on display alongside the other art installations. Hastings Academy music students have been involved in songwriting workshops with local musician Gwyneth Herbert, they will be performing with her at the opening of the festival.
The Wood People Connective is proud to present, ‘Wilding’ – free, off-grid, forest arts in Church Wood, Hastings, East Sussex, 5-13th June 2021.
Supported by an Arts Council England National Lottery project grant we’ve commissioned six local artists, including our very own Beccy Mccray and Luke Funnell (Project Rewild), to create site-specific art installations using only foraged timber and natural materials. The artworks are inspired by woodland dens and reference ideas of home, shelter, wildness and wilderness. Each artist is paired with a local community group (from schools, to people with dementia and those surviving the streets) to workshop their designs and, where possible, build together in the woods.
We’ve also curated nature-themed acoustic music and storytelling to place amongst the installations, and a programme of participatory craft workshops …all unplugged and in the woods!
Creativity and nature are essential for our well-being, yet disadvantaged communities typically have the least access to both. Child poverty levels in Hastings are 13th highest in England, and for this reason the festival will be FREE and inclusive.
Wilding aims to get people back outside; connecting people, trees and nature through creativity. Nature is a unifying force and the woodland will become a magical, outdoor community space to meet, be inspired, to learn, play and create.
Feel the interconnected fungi, smell the forest floor, see the creatures, insects & birds, hear the ancient trees creek & the whispering wild wood calling you deeper into its midst… The wilderness belongs to the wild!
Tickets for FREE live events available via this page from 17th May.
